WHAT IS CREATE?

Create is a space where people who are passionate about exploring creativity can express who God is through the arts. We believe God is a creative God, this is revealed through everything we see around us. From the smallest animal to the greatest oceans and largest mountains all creation reveals his glory. We are the image bearers of God, made to reflect and reveal him. When we create, sing, dance, design and communicate we are fulfilling who we are made to be. We are passionate about living life to the full, encountering God and being transformed. As we do this we invite people to create, sing, dance and design with us.

Create is an evolution of the Urban Warriors team, a volunteer youth work team based at Yeovil Community Church for 10 years meting the needs of the local community through schools work, drop-in’s, detached work, youth groups, mentoring, camps, trips and much more. In the last few years we have seen a breakdown in local resources and youth work for young people and have been part of the solution with other agencies and community groups. Some of the most exciting and transformative work we have done through this period has been based around running creative academies, music and media programs designed to help young people express themselves and achieve a skill they have not had access to before.

We have seen young people with behavioural issues; no self-esteem, communication issues and more express themselves through music or media. This creativity and expression leads them to feel alive and have hope this is because they are fulfilling who they are meant to be – creative.

YOUTH WORK
We are passionate about seeing young people become all that they were meant to be so we work with youth groups, run creative clubs, mentor young people and more.

We aim to meet practical, spiritual, emotional and physical needs in the community and inspire this generation to become a generation of change, hope and love. Passionate about raising self-esteem, giving young people the opportunities to achieve and explore their creativity.

We were also are keen to provide teenagers with positive role models who encourage them, listen to them, and support them.

SCHOOLS WORK
We are passionate about engaging young people in Creative arts, whether to support those on the edge of exclusion, develop self esteem, work on behavioural management or simply giving opportunities to achieve and learn new skills.

We work with local schools running running projects in media and music production with small groups of young people. These projects are focused on making a video about issues that are significant to the young people, or producing music from scratch and being able to take a CD home. These projects work for groups of up to 10 students and can run over an intense week or a half term, in school or at The GateWay.

ROCK ACADEMY
We run Rock Academy clubs in school, these are lunchtime clubs mentoring Rock bands. These sessions feature instrument lessons, band dynamics, learning to play together and more. We work with bands practicing songs and learning to write their own, finishing off the year with a gig.

MENTORING
We have trained mentors on the team who are available to mentor young people in school, this is support during lesson times or lunchtime. We also do detached work in school at lunchtime to support young people further and build relationships that flow from lunchtime clubs and other youth groups.

CHRISTIAN UNIONS
We run Christian unions in the local secondary schools in partnership with local youth workers from churches across the town and surrounding area. These flow from Unite, a bi-monthly youth event with young people from across the local church.

There are a number of training options whilst being on the Create team. We partner with an organisation called SWYM for training in youth and children work. We have trainees for a year or more with a range of training opportunities, SWYM foundation through to degree options. We also offer our own leadership development program working alongside different leaders and doing the ‘Growing leaders course’.

Create team members work for the year for about 40 hours a week, serving our local area and resourcing the wider church. Team members get a day off a week (usually a Saturday) as well as Christmas and Easter breaks etc. This is a full time commitment finishing the year with a week at New Wine serving on team in the youth venues.

There are opportunities each year for short term missions over seas through some of our different partners – Hope for kids international, Asha, or even some of the churches we partner with.

Each year we are looking for people who are skilled in Music, Media, Dance, Youth-work and Administration. If you are interested in joining the create team or want more information please get in touch through our contact page.

YOUTH GROUPS
Each week we are involved in running Friday night youth groups for young people ranging from 4 – 14. These groups are a chance for us to share stories, play crazy games and have fun. We are passionate about raising up young leaders and so we have volunteers from across our different older youth groups helping out with these clubs. For more information on the different groups click here.

WORSHIP ACADEMY
One of our big passions is raising up young leaders, musicians and creatives. We run worship Academy at The Gateway on Tuesday afternoons for 11 – 14’s to teach them more about worship. These are practical sessions playing music but also with teaching and spending time worshipping together. We get our young bands and worship leading worship at events and at Yeovil Community Church whenever we can.

MENTORING
All of our team members mentor young people, this is a space for discussion, working through issues in their lives or just someone there to listen and support.
